NEWSRACK CONTROL... Summer in the antelope valley... the lovely blue, yellow and red throw away newracks sprout up in public rights-of-way. What could be more lovely than a newrack blocking your grandma's wheelchair at the end of the required ADA ramp or blocking your view from a driveway. Perhaps its the carpet of papers dotting the landscape as their free throw aways are, in fact, thrown away by helpful and industrials elfs emptying their contents for the sheer joy of watching the winds scatter it. What sound is more peaceful to the ear than the soothing melody of the slamming newspaper rack door; the rack so thoughfully drilled into the sidewalk outside your bedroom window and filled before dawn by a faithful servant with their environmental vehicular nightmare putting away at the curb, the stereo a reassuring reminder that, yes, that newsrack will be full should your paper not be thrown in your flowerbed 20 feet away this morning. What more could one wish for? How about Yank magazine? Or guides to Escort services? How about just plain old porno! Yes, this can all be yours, just like down in LA!. No embarssing trips to the drugstore. Just grab a freebie outta one of the dozens of new racks bound to join their cohorts blocking your passenger car door. That's the reality, and that is why I pushed for strengthening our newrack ordinance and am continuing to press for increased enforcment for those racks illegally installed on the public right-of-way. If you suspect a newsrack or freebie rack has been illegally installed without proper encroachment permits (hint - most have no permit...) report it to Code Enforcement at 267-5200 and keep Palmdale beautiful.
